EMERGENCY HELP

St Mary's Parish has an active conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society. The local conference is a cell within the Bendigo region, which is in turn a unit of the State Conference. The members of the Society carry on the work of the Society's founders by attending on the poor and lonely and those in need of emergency assistance. The Society provides food, bedding, clothing, furniture, temporary accommodation, and help with the payment of bills to those in need. Such help is given after conference members meet personally with those seeking help to discuss their needs.

THE SHOP

The Society also operates a shop at 244 Barker Street, Castlemaine (Tel 54 724419) in the main street of Castlemaine. The shop is staffed by volunteers and new volunteers are always gratefully welcomed. The purpose of the shop is to provide a venue for the sale of goods at a reasonable price to the poor. Proceeds from the sale of goods raise money to maintain the building and provide funds to buy food and emergency accommodation for the needy.

MAKING CONTACT

There are rooms at the rear of the shop where conference members can be contacted. Anyone in need can call or come to the shop where they will be put in contact with a member of conference. Alternatively they can contact Mrs Trish Bowles or other members of the St Mary's Conference through the St Mary's Parish Office.
